Where’s Your Focus

Something I learned as a young bull rider was that you have to keep your focus for the entire ride; if you get distracted during the ride, you will not make the whistle. I can’t tell you how many times I got bucked off simply because I wasn’t keeping my focus. If you are riding bulls, you will be in situations where it’s easy to lose your focus.

Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives.

My friend had this dog named Sam that was obsessed with his fetching rope. If you even walked near that rope, he was right there ready to get it. That rope was always on Sam’s mind. One afternoon I was playing fetch with Sam and I was amazed at how intense his focus was on the rope. Sam locked his eyes on that rope and never looked away. Someone could have shot a gun and Sam would’ve kept his eyes on the rope.

Imagine how much better you’d ride if you didn’t lose your focus. As a bull rider, you have to WANT to ride that bull. Your desire to ride will be evident in how strong your focus is. As you do your drills, work on your focus. Have someone try to distract you so that you can get better at keeping your eyes and mind where they should be. Don’t let anything distract you from what you are doing at that moment.
